Track which campaign a WhatsApp chat came from
Checked against the app on
Give each campaign its own WhatsApp link, or tie it to your Click-to-WhatsApp ads (ads from Meta Ads Manager that open a WhatsApp chat). Mesy calls this an entry point. When a customer messages you through one, Mesy knows which campaign they came from. It links the chat to the right contact and can start a workflow (a rule that does routine work for you).
Managers and admins add and change entry points. Members can see the list, open each entry point’s details and pick one in a workflow.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Entry points are on the Marketing page. Marketing only appears in the sidebar when your workspace has a record type for campaigns. A record is one entry in Mesy, such as one customer. A record type is a kind of record, such as Contacts or Deals. Your admin sets this up in Design your data.
- To get a link, you need a WhatsApp line: a WhatsApp business number connected to Mesy. Your admin connects lines in Admin › Workspace Channels, as shown in Workspace settings, channels and email templates.
Add an entry point
Section titled “Add an entry point”To add one:
- Open Marketing in the sidebar.
- Scroll to WhatsApp entry points, under Sources.
- Click Add entry point. The New entry point window opens.
- Enter a Name, such as Experience Day, October 2026.
- Enter a Code, such as EXPDAY. Customers send this code in their first message, so Mesy knows where they came from. Use 3 to 24 letters, digits or dashes, starting with a letter or digit. Mesy turns letters into capitals and drops spaces as you type. Pick something customers won’t type by chance.
- Read the Prefilled message. Mesy writes it from the name and code, such as “Hi! I’d like to know more about Experience Day. (EXPDAY)”. Reword it if you like, but keep the code in it.
- If you run Click-to-WhatsApp ads, copy their ad ids from Meta Ads Manager.
- Paste them into Click-to-WhatsApp ad ids, one per line.
- If the entry point belongs to a campaign, click Link one under Feeds and pick it. You can skip this. It only labels the entry point. To add people to the campaign, use a workflow, as shown below.
- Click Create entry point. The new card appears under WhatsApp entry points with an On badge.
Another way in: click New source at the top of the Marketing page and choose WhatsApp entry point.
Share the link
Section titled “Share the link”To copy the link:
- On the entry point’s card, click Details.
- Under Click-to-chat link, find the line you want. Each link shows who the line belongs to, then its number, such as Team line · +65 6123 4567 or Sarah Tan · +65 9123 4567.
- Click the copy icon next to the link. Mesy shows “Link copied”.
Put the link behind a button on your website, in a QR code or in a post. When a customer taps it, WhatsApp opens with the prefilled message ready to send.
Admins see a link for every connected line. Everyone else sees links for team lines, which the whole team can see and answer. They also see a link for their assigned line, which only they can see.
A chat that starts from one of your listed ads doesn’t need the code. Mesy recognises the ad itself.
Check what happened to each chat
Section titled “Check what happened to each chat”Mesy links a chat automatically when a message in it has the code or comes from a listed ad. Capital letters in the code don’t matter. A chat is linked through one entry point only, so a later code in the same chat doesn’t move it.
Mesy acts for one person on your team:
- On an assigned line, that’s the person the line is assigned to.
- On a team line, that’s whoever created the entry point (its owner).
The new contact belongs to that person. So does any confirm card in Approvals (a box that waits for someone to approve it). Mesy only matches contacts that person can see.
Each card shows Chats (how many chats came in) and Last chat (when the newest arrived). To see each chat:
- On the entry point’s card, click Details.
- Look under Recent chats. It lists the 50 newest chats, newest first.
Each row shows when the chat came in, a badge and the sender. It also says “via link code”, or “via ad” followed by the ad’s headline (or its id when there is no headline). Some rows add a short reason. When the chat is linked to a contact you can see, click Open record to go to it.
| Badge | What happened |
|---|---|
| Filing | Mesy is still working on the chat. |
| Linked | One contact has the number. Mesy linked the chat to that contact. |
| Contact created | Nobody has the number. Mesy created a contact with the number and the customer’s WhatsApp name, then linked the chat. |
| Already linked | The chat was linked to a contact before. It stays linked. |
| Needs a person | Several contacts share the number. Someone who can read that line links the chat by hand in Inbox › WhatsApp. |
| Waiting for review | Nobody has the number, and your contacts have a field that must be filled in, such as a last name. A confirm card waits in Approvals with the name and number filled in. Approving it creates the contact and links the chat. |
| Not filed | Mesy couldn’t link the chat. The reason says why. For example, someone removed the chat’s link on purpose earlier. |
Mesy only matches a number saved with + and the country code, such as +65 9123 4567. If a contact’s number is saved without it, Mesy doesn’t match it and creates a new contact.
A chat marked Needs a person or Waiting for review updates once someone links it or approves its confirm card. To link a chat by hand, see Read and reply to WhatsApp messages.
The sender’s WhatsApp name shows only to people who can read that line. Everyone else sees “WhatsApp sender”.
Start a workflow from an entry point
Section titled “Start a workflow from an entry point”To run a workflow for chats from an entry point:
- On a computer, open Workflows.
- Click New workflow.
- Under When, pick A chat is linked.
- Under On a, pick your contacts’ record type.
- Under Entry point, pick the entry point. Leave it on any chat to run for every linked chat.
- Add the steps you want, such as Add to a campaign or Create a task.
- Click Save. Mesy saves the workflow switched off.
- Click the switch at the top of the page. The workflow is now on.
From now on, the workflow runs each time a chat from that entry point is linked. It also runs when someone links a waiting chat by hand or approves its confirm card.
Sometimes a customer’s chat is already linked to a contact. If you picked one entry point, the workflow also runs the first time that customer writes in through it. This happens only if their chat never came through an entry point before. With any chat, the workflow skips these customers.
Add to a campaign adds the contact to the campaign. It doesn’t message them. This step needs the Marketing add-on (an extra part of Mesy your business can turn on). To learn more about workflows, see Build a workflow.
Change an entry point
Section titled “Change an entry point”To change one:
- On the entry point’s card, click Edit. The Edit entry point window opens.
- Change the fields you need, such as adding more ad ids.
- Click Save. Mesy shows “Entry point saved”.
If you change the code, links you already shared still carry the old code. Mesy stops recognising chats from them, so share the new link.
Switch off or delete an entry point
Section titled “Switch off or delete an entry point”- Click Switch off on the card to stop Mesy linking new chats through it. The badge changes to Off. The link still opens WhatsApp. Click Switch on to start again.
- Click the bin icon, then click Delete to confirm. Mesy stops linking chats from the link, and workflows set to this entry point stop running. Its Recent chats list is deleted. Contacts it created and chats it linked stay.
If something doesn’t work
Section titled “If something doesn’t work”- Details says “Connect a WhatsApp line under Admin › Workspace Channels to get a link.” Your workspace has no WhatsApp line you can see yet. Ask your admin to connect one.
- Chats show Not filed, and the reason says no contact can be matched or created. Your contacts need a phone field that Mesy uses to spot the same person. Ask your admin to tick one, as shown in Design your data.
- The badge reads Off · owner left. The entry point’s owner was removed from the workspace, so Mesy switched it off. Switch on doesn’t work on it. To keep using the code, delete the entry point and add it again with the same code. You become its owner.
- A chat shows Not filed, and the reason says “the entry point’s owner can no longer act” or “the line’s holder can no longer act”. The line’s holder is the person the line is assigned to. That person’s account isn’t active. On a team line, delete the entry point and add it again. On an assigned line, ask your admin to assign the line to someone else.
- The window says “The code EXPDAY is already used by …” or “One of these ad ids is already used by …”. Another entry point already has that code or ad id. Choose a different code, or remove the ad id from the other entry point first.
